WARDOGS Classes & Roles — How the Six Roles Actually Work
WARDOGS has six class roles — Career, Medic, Support, Recon, Pilot and Driver — but none of them are picked at character creation. How loadouts set your role, and the unlock levels that matter.
WARDOGS does not make you pick a class at character creation — and that surprises most new players. Instead the game tracks six role progressions in parallel: Career (your overall level), Medic, Support, Recon, Pilot and Driver. The Season 1 changelog lists all six tracks with their unlock tables, confirming there is no seventh hidden class and no class-swap menu to find.
Stated by developer · 2026-09-16The practical question — "how do I become a medic/pilot/driver?" — has a one-line answer: your role is set by your loadout, not by a menu. Carry a defibrillator and heals and you are playing Medic; take the pilot seat and Pilot XP starts flowing; man a support turret or haul supplies and Support ticks up. Community guides and testers describe the same behavior, and BULKHEAD's unlock tables are organized around it.
Community report · 2026-09-16The Six Roles, One Paragraph Each
| Role | Levels by doing what | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Career | everything (overall level) | the headline level 6–50 curve; gates general gear like AP ammo and optics |
| Medic | revives, bandages, defib saves | the defibrillator at level 11 — the money-printing unlock |
| Support | building, hauling, turret work | hammers by role (Large Hammer at level 8 post-Season 1), heavy emplacements |
| Recon | spotting, marksman play | spotting tools and marksman-rifle perks |
| Pilot | flying helicopters/planes | airframe perks; fly taxi income pairs with it |
| Driver | driving & crewing vehicles | tank roles — Season 1 pegs Heavy Tank Driver at level 35 |
The Unlock Levels That Matter (Season 1 Tables)
Season 1 published exact role-level requirements, and two of them moved or were clarified:
- Defibrillator = Medic 11 — unchanged, still the single most valuable early unlock. At five XP sources and active reviving, players report hitting it in a focused evening or two.
- Large Hammer = Support 8 (was 7, and the cash price jumped to $75,000 on the role track) — BULKHEAD deliberately made heavy construction a real commitment.
- Heavy Tank Driver = 35, Artillery = Support 45 / Career 90 — vehicle power is gated deep; plan on weeks, not sessions.
- Artillery Tank Career 90 is the ceiling item in the entire game right now — the level 50 Career cap plus the level-50+ band extension exists largely to pace it.
Full Unlock Ladders (Player-Documented)
A veteran's 125-hour run documented the per-role ladders end to end. These are player-documented figures (community level), not an official table — treat them as the working reference until BULKHEAD publishes one:
| Role | Documented unlock ladder |
|---|---|
| Assault | AK @ 3 · Galil @ 10 · Galil 50-rd mags @ 15 · AK 60-rd mags @ 25 |
| Medic | smoke grenade @ 5 · IFAC @ 9 · defib @ 11 · stim @ 14 · Vector @ 35 |
| Support | RPG @ 5 · M249 @ 15 · handheld AA @ 16 · mortar @ 20 · AT mines @ 25 |
| Recon | binoculars @ 2 · SKS @ 5 · Mosin @ 10 · SVD @ 12 · bow @ 17 |
| Pilot | Little Bird @ 4 · Lakota @ 10 · rocket Little Bird @ 20 · Havoc @ 35 |
| Driver | Ural @ 3 · Humvee @ 15 · large crates @ 16 · Heavy Tank @ 35 |
Two Career milestones worth planning around: level 45 unlocks the high-capacity defib battery (250 charges vs 100 — roughly ten revives instead of four), and level 63 unlocks the first AP round (7.62x39). Body armor milestones sit at Career 2 / 30 / 60 / 100 for tiers 1–4, and player-documented reduction rates are 30% / 40% / 55% / 65% (effective HP ≈ 143 / 167 / 222 / 286 on a 100 base). One consequence that changes gunfights: against a tier-3 helmet the Mosin no longer one-shots heads — most assault rifles need four headshots.
Community report · 2026-09-26Because your headline level is the sum of all role levels, the fastest route to the Artillery gate at Career 90 is leveling your weakest role, not grinding your best one.
Community report · 2026-09-26How XP Actually Flows
Progression XP comes from five sources: time played, zone control, kills, support actions and objectives — which is why passive play levels you, just slowly. Season 1 also published the bands: level 20 is 250,000 XP, level 50 is one million, and one caveat is official now: the in-game XP counter can display inflated values, so judge progress by unlocks landing, not the raw number.
Stated by developer · 2026-09-16Which Role Should a New Player Level First?
- Medic — the defib at 11 pays cash and levels itself; it is the core of the budget tiers in best loadouts. This is the community's near-unanimous first pick.
- Support — hammers and FOB work print money through the building loops in the money guide, and Season 1 made the role's top hammer a badge of commitment.
- Pilot/Driver — high ceiling, high barrier: expensive airframes, deep level gates (Heavy Tank Driver 35) and an RPG-shaped target on your back. Learn the fundamentals in helicopter controls before buying your first $35,000 Lakota.
Starter Kit per Role
Because roles are loadout-driven, each role has a natural starter kit. Everything below prices out in the loadout cost calculator.
Medic — the first role everyone should level
Free or cheap rifle + the biggest backpack you can afford, filled with resuscitators and bandages. Revives paid ~$900 and bandages ~$200 per use in community-documented runs, and the defibrillator unlocks at Medic 11 (~$1,600 plus ~$150 batteries). This kit is Tier 1–2 of best loadouts — you level the role and turn a profit.
Community report · 2026-09-16Support — paid to build
Cheapest gun + a small or medium hammer. Every productive swing paid ~$15 and completing structures $1,200–1,500 — the Season 1 economy left the swings untouched and only made the entry items serious money (FOB $7,500, role-track Large Hammer $75,000 at Support 8). Build for the squad and the role pays for itself long before the big hammer. Full loops in the FOB guide and money guide. Stated by developer · 2026-09-16
Recon — the spotting economy
Binoculars (~$75) are the role's real weapon: prone on a ridgeline marking enemies, vehicles and structures pays continuously, with assist payouts when your marks die. Pair with the SVD (~$1,000) or the budget SV98 when you can afford glass. Spotting income is loop #1 in the money guide.
Community report · 2026-09-15Pilot — learn before you buy
The airframes are endgame money (Lakota $35,000, Little Bird miniguns $50,000 after Season 1) — do not grind toward them first. Spend sessions in the Firing Range, set the Battlefield-style binds from helicopter controls, then earn as a taxi: drop-off cash, tips and assist income.
Stated by developer · 2026-09-16Driver — one APC per match
The APC (satellite-dish icon) pays a royalty every time a teammate spawns on it — first driver to take it owns the income for the match. Drive it to the zone or park it at a friendly FOB and switch to your medic kit. Tank roles proper (Heavy Tank Driver 35) are a long-term goal, not a starter kit.
Community report · 2026-09-15Career — the umbrella level
Career is every role's XP pooled: it gates general gear like AP ammunition and optics rather than a playstyle of its own. The community leveling route (cheap SMG early, assault rifles after) doubles as Career leveling, and Season 1's published bands (level 20 = 250,000 XP) set expectations — the fast unlock-grind route is in best loadouts.

There are no class-specific weapons in the lockout sense — the gun you can afford is the gun you can carry, which is why the best weapons tier list applies to every role. Loadout math lives in the loadout cost calculator, and the absolute basics are in the beginner guide.
